Ben Jonson seems to be holding up his hand conceding the game. Many scholars think the man holding the board and taking Jonson's piece must be Shakespeare because 16th Century painters, Renaissance artists, liked their portraits to tell a story. Jonson's concession has no depth of meaning unless the man who is winning the game is Shakespeare.
